Plastic Surgery Ban For Dogs?

Liposuction, nose jobs, and tummy tucks are the kind of procedures that keep New York and California plastic surgeons busy. But for people, not their pooches, right?

Wrong. Retriever rhinoplasty? Labrador liposuction? A face lift for Fido?

Ear jobs, tail tucks, and defanging (having teeth pulled) are apparently just the kind of procedures that some folks have done on their dogs

In a bold move, one courageous California city, plans to take a stand by saying “No!” to animal cosmetic surgery. The West Hollywood City Council plans to have its City Attorney draft language banning onychechtomy a/k/a the mutiliation of animals.

At the February 7, 2005 City Council meeting, the following pooch-protection agenda was put on the table:
5.C. DIRECTION TO THE CITY ATTORNEY TO DRAFT AN ORDINANCE TO EXPAND THE BAN ON ONYCHECHTOMY ALSO KNOWN AS THE BAN ON MUTILATION OF ANIMALS (ANTI-DECLAWING) TO INCLUDE OTHER NON-THERAPEUTIC PROCEDURES:
The City Council will consider directing the City Attorney to draft an ordinance banning ear cropping, tail docking, debarking, and other non-therapeutic procedures.
RECOMMENDATION: Direct the city attorney to prepare a draft ordinance banning other non-therapeutic procedures beyond declawing to be brought back to the Council for discussion and adoption.

DogLaw.com’s position? Keep things natural, keep it real -- your dog is the best looking pooch in the world! Why do you think all the other pups come over for a sniff, a playdate in the dog run, and to tear up that fancy Oriental rug in your living room?

This week, we salute West Hollywood politicians for taking a bold move for our four-legged friends.
